Released in 1983, the Sony Walkman WM-20 was designed with a focus on light weight and small size. The goal was to create a device no bigger than the size of a cassette tape case, emphasizing the Walkman as the new modern necessrity that could be easily carried in a pocket or handbag.

Superstar idol singer MATSUDA Seiko, who was signed to the CBS/Sony label, appeared the marketing campaign for the WM-20 as well as the later WM-30.
