Look to the side; I am an underarm hair beauty.

This is a Mad Ad, a series of parody advertisements that appeared regularly in Focus magazine. This one targets KUROKI Kaoru, an adult film star who became well-known in mainstream media due to her outspoken, progressive and feminist viewpoints on sex and erotic media... and her armpit hair.

Kuroki stopped shaving at the age of 16, a rather shocking decision in a culture with strict expectations of women. She has described her armpit hair as a "performance that expresses the freedom I desire." This unique feature served to set her apart when she began working in adult films along with the "erotic documentary" pioneer TŌRU Muranishi.

She soon began to appear on mainstream variety shows. She was known for raising her arms well above her head when doing her self-introduction to proudly and emphatically display her unshaven hair which, especially when paired with her deft use of keigo that reflected her elite upbringing, caused quite a sensation.

(There are a number of English language articles about her online which indicate that her armpit hair growth was in protest to the censorship of genitals and, in particular, pubic hair in media. While there is certainly a parallel that could be drawn, we could find no mention in any Japanese sources of such an intentional protest. Moreover, considering she stopped shaving at 16 years old, we find this unlikely.)

Which finally brings us to the parody page above, featuring Kuroki's trademark underarm hair shaped into the logos of various designer brands. They call this new "trend" wakiransu, a mix of waki (armpit) and fragrance and reference the perfumes created by these high class brands (Gucci, Chanel, Ellesse and Yves Saint-Laurent). There is a bit of a double entendre here as Kuroki's first name, Kaoru, has the meaning of fragrance.
